Job Title: Manager, Logistics Rail Contracting

 

Position Location: Westchester, IL

 

Business Unit: North America Supply Chain

           

Primary Function     

Manage the contracting for rail transportation, rail car storage/siding, and rail car leasing for US and Canada. Rail transportation contracting includes outbound products, including agriproducts, as well as inbound commodities such as corn and coal. Rail car storage is contracted to facilitate US and Canada plant operational flexibility and minimize congestion. Rail car leasing responsibilities include managing each of the rail car categories with a focus on service reliability and flexibility to adjust rail car categories in accordance with the Fleet Model estimated requirements. Develop strategies and continuously improve all aspects of rail transportation services with an emphasis on minimizing costs and ensuring customer satisfaction while managing relationships with the plants, customer service, quality, sales, finance and the vendor base.

           

Reports To: Director, Logistics Rail Operations and Energy Procurement

           

Supervision: This position has one to two direct analyst reports           

 

 

Key Deliverables / Critical Deliverables

 

           

Business           

  • Manage: Manage and negotiate transportation, storage, and rail car leasing contracts, totaling approximately $100 MM in annual spend, to ensure service continuity while limiting the risk of price increases
  • Key Performance Indicators: Develop and maintain KPI’s to clearly and concisely proactively report the status of the rail transport and storage categories on a monthly or quarterly basis
  • Compliance: Ensure all contracts comply with all applicable regulations including the US DOT/FRA and Transport Canada; and maintain and comply with internal ISO and FSSC procedures
  • Budgeting: Supervise the activities regarding the Rail Rate Manual and Routing Guide to ensure rates and routes are current; and participate in Goal and LE processes. Report monthly to elucidate Budget vs. Actual variances
  • Continuous Improvement: Initiate, document, and track cost savings or synergy project results. Identify, evaluate and recommend plant infrastructure improvements that will improve rail operations and efficiencies and lower costs
  • Presentations: Develop charts, graphs, and other visuals for internal and external reporting 

 

Agility and Innovation    

  • Strategic Sourcing: Develop and maintain strategic sourcing strategy documents for all rail transportation and storage categories. Clearly identify and categorize strategic vs. leveraged sourcing categories
  • Develop multi-year strategic project plans for each sourcing category
  • Flexible Sourcing: Foster and maintain vendor relationships to provide substitute rail services to facilitate continuous plant operations
  • Market Intelligence: Retain up-to-date knowledge of rail market fundamentals and trends by holding quarterly or semi-annual reviews with suppliers and attending local rail transportation meetings
  • Methodology: Explore opportunities to add value to the rail network by identifying and implementing new tools and processes  

 

Relationships and People 

  • Work cross functionally: Support Agribusiness, Corn Procurement, Energy Procurement, and plant operations teams to ensure logistics support is satisfactory and that communication channels are clearly understood by all; and provide supporting documentation to Finance and Corporate Treasury for rail car leasing justifications
  • Leadership: Coach, counsel, develop and motivate personnel to successfully achieve department objectives. Assess their skills and abilities and implement a plan to assure their continued development
  • Customer Focus: Ensure team is in alignment with internal and external stakeholders in order to maintain high levels of service and customer satisfaction            

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:           

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, or Technical Degree; If technical, with relevant business experience; Master’s degree in business would be a plus  
  • Experience in transportation/logistics with a proven track record of optimization; and possess a thorough knowledge of rail markets
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization and use influence skills to obtain cooperation and support across multiple departments and functions within the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex business situations and problems, coordinate many complex activities/projects simultaneously and direct successful solutions
  • Demonstrated commitment to the budgeting, strategic sourcing, and continuous improvement processes, with the ability to motivate teams to support these processes
  • Medium skill level using MS Office and SAP systems
  • Must be able to travel up to 30%
