Job Title: Manager, Logistics Operations - Canada

Position Location: Mississauga, ON

Business Unit: North America (Supply Chain)

Primary Function:

This position is responsible for the management and execution of truck logistics operational strategies. Individual will be responsible for realizing infrastructure and process improvements, developing performance metrics while driving core cost and service related initiatives. The scope includes Canada bulk and dry van truck, intermodal, rail, Agri and LTL modes. The goal is to utilize a metrics based approach to continuously improve all aspects of transportation services with an emphasis on minimizing cost and ensuring customer satisfaction while managing relationships with plants, customer service and sales. The group managed by this position will have the primary responsibility to manage carrier performance, order and operational execution. The position will act as the primary backup to Manager Logistics, Truck.

Reports To: Manager, Truck Logistics - Operations & Strategic Sourcing

Supervision: This position is responsible for the management of 6 direct reports that are remotely located.

Critical Deliverables:

  • Manage daily operations with expert knowledge of bulk, intermodal, dry van, rail, Agri and LTL operations. Develop carrier operational relationships and obtain carrier commitment to drive high service standards at a competitive cost advantage.
  • Manage carrier base to ensure that operational and service expectations are met. Anticipate customer impacts when making decisions.
  • Execute procurement initiatives amongst direct reports, plants and carrier base.
  • Develop and utilize metrics to support, monitor and drive positive change to critical aspects of logistics including; process improvement, carrier scorecards, on time pick up/delivery metrics, routing guide compliance, tender acceptance rates, optimal sourcing locations, freight audit and payment and dedicated fleet scenarios.
  • Utilize transportation management system to meet evolving business needs including; freight rate and pay, routing guides, modal configurations and data integrity verification.  
  • Manage direct reports ancillary responsibilities including; rail transactions, customs documentation and SAP administrative work.
  • Lead or participate in special projects to drive growth or continuous improvement.
  • Work with Manager to codify and institutionalize best practices within the logistics group.
  • Develop and utilize metrics based approach to drive positive change throughout the logistics and supply-chain network.
  • Drive efficiencies by providing root cause problem solving techniques to service related issues, sourcing and freight payment functions.
  • Leverage industry knowledge to manage risks around carrier capacity, volume surges and rate benchmarking.
  • Implement logistics solutions by improving current transportation load planning and tendering management; create tools to support various analytical projects.
  • Manage implementation of simultaneous improvement projects while maintaining service levels during successful transitions.
  • Develop and leverage cross functional relationships with customer service, supply chain, accounting and field personnel to drive cost and service improvement initiatives. Communicate impacts from logistics projects and network changes.
  • Motivate team and obtain commitment from cross-functional coworkers, and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
  • Coach, counsel, develop and motivate team to successfully achieve department objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements

  • At least 5 years of previous related work experience as well as people/team management experience with a proven track record of managing, mentoring, coaching, and developing high performing teams

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, or Technical Degree. If technical with relevant business experience. Master’s degree in business a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex business situations and problems, coordinate many complex activities/projects simultaneously and direct successful fact-based solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across functions to resolve issues

  • Strong business and financial acumen with ability to successfully to contribute to the budget and planning processes

  • Thorough knowledge of truck and intermodal, technology markets.

  • Proven knowledge of supplier profile cost optimization, negotiation, analytical, conflict resolution, collaboration, data processing and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying improvement opportunities and leading teams to complete projects

  • Prior experience with Continuous Improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma desired

  • Prior experience with Project Management and Change Management desired

  • Must be able to travel up to 20%.
